Memories
I restarted reading the book The Road by Cormac McCarthy and there is one quote early on in the book in which one of the protagonists, a dad, tells his son that
You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.
The reason this stood out to me is that indeed, there are certain memories that the more you try to suppress1 them, the more they surface. Personally, the less attention I pay to specific thoughts that come to mind, the quicker I am to forget them. This takes constant effort at the beginning; that is, to not pay attention to certain thoughts. Then there are those moments that you wish you could relive, yet they may be fleeting memories, devoid of their richness and vividness as time passes by.
In writing this short blurb, I had to look at the different definitions of the words suppression and repression. This is worth looking up yourself if you are curious. ↩︎
